A few weeks ago, a sick dog arrived at a county animal shelter in Texas. The pup had cracked, infected skin, and her entire body was coated in a strange purple substance.
As soon as This Is Houston rescue found out about the pup, they volunteered to take care of her. They rushed her to the emergency vet, where she got the lifesaving care she needed.
The vets determined that the purple substance was an antiseptic treatment typically used for cows and other farm animals. Whoever had been taking care of her before had likely covered her with it in a desperate attempt to treat her mange.
When Bri, a frequent dog foster mama, saw the pup’s intake photo, something about it spoke to her deeply.
“I don’t know why, but I was just like, ‘I have got to be that dog’s foster mom,’” Bri, who preferred to have her last name omitted, told The Dodo.
The dog, named Violet, was transferred to Bri’s home as soon as she left the hospital. Bri got to work getting her as comfortable as possible.
“She was cold because she had no hair,” Bri said. “So I immediately put pajamas on her.”
Swaddled in her cozy loungewear, Violet relaxed. She drifted off into a long, peaceful sleep, exhausted from everything she’d just been through.
Bri has been caring for Violet around the clock for the past three weeks. She gives Violet regular medicated baths, then rubs her whole body with coconut oil and wraps her up in her fuzzy pajamas.
Thanks to the daily TLC, Violet already looks like a completely different dog. The purple is almost all gone, and her fur is beginning to grow back.
“She’s feeling better and is definitely enjoying being spoiled and taken care of now,” Tara Hall, This Is Houston board member, told The Dodo.
Violet has undergone not only a physical transformation, but an emotional one as well. Her affectionate personality has been shining through, and she’s been loving hanging out with Bri’s pittie.
“She’s a lot happier now, I can tell,” Bri said. “And she just loves to cuddle … [S]he’ll nuzzle herself like a little squirrel in my arms.”
While Violet needs to finish healing before moving into her forever home, she’s available for adoption applications anytime. The sweet year-and-a-half-old dog wants nothing more than a family who will give her all the affection she deserves.
